We have high expectations for all our students and work hard to raise aspirations. We understand it is a difficult time for young people and their families. We work hard to understand the local context and what opportunities are available for our students. We will explore potential career and education routes and discuss back up plans with students but are there to answer your questions and concerns too. Not everyone has a dream, for those of who don’t know what they want to do we will explore options and ensure they experience a range of opportunities to leave us ready for their next steps. We will ensure we offer:
- A stable careers programme. The careers programme outlines what students will be studying and when. It can be found on the school website and will be shared through our social media. There are set things that happen each year but the careers team will support students to pursue any opportunities they think will help them achieve their goals. Students will experience activities linked to careers in form time, life skills lessons, assemblies and all other subjects.
- Learning from career and labour market information. Society changes very quickly and the jobs people will have in the future may not exist yet. We will signpost students to the most up to date information to help you see what future study options are available and what and job opportunities they will be best suited to. We can do this through a range of online tools or one to one guidance from the careers team, this information can be shared with parents/carers, many of the links are listed below.
- Addressing the needs of each student. Students are continually developing their essential skills, the skills you need to succeed in any work place. They will have a range of careers experiences in their time at the Edge and we want you to actively engage with this process too. At the end of KS3 we will contact you about deciding what students will be studying in KS4. You can talk to any member of staff about this and we can arrange for a meeting with our independent careers adviser. Students will also get one to one support throughout KS4 to help plan their next steps, you can request a meeting with the careers team at any time to talk this through.
- Linking curriculum learning to careers. Each member of staff will share with students why their subject is important and what skills they are developing in their studies. We all have our own journey to share and can tell you about what career opportunities each subject can lead to. Our email addresses are shared on the school website and appointments can be made at any time, alternatively we are available at every parents evening.
- Encounters with employers and employees. Students will meet a range of visitors and speakers in school and learn about what their role is and what skills are important for their job. In KS4 they will get the opportunity to put what they have learned in to practice with mock interviews, enterprise activities and careers fairs. These events will be shared on our social media platforms with a contact name for any concerns or questions.
- Experiences of workplaces. Students will have the opportunity to visit a range of workplaces and speak to staff about what their job entails. Towards the end of year 9 we will contact you to talk through work related learning placements for KS4. We will find students a suitable placement, ensure the necessary health and safety checks are in place and monitor their progress.
- Encounters with further and higher education. Students will visit other schools, colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers. In KS4 they will get to experience what learning is like in these environments and hopefully start to think about which route is right for them. We will share details of these visits through the usual social media channels.
- Personal guidance. Students will have lots of opportunities to talk to staff about their future but we are also there to support parents and carers. The careers team will help students to create a bespoke careers plan and work towards completing a Record of Achievement and a CV in year 11. In KS4 they will have meetings with Birmingham Careers Service advisers to make sure they are on the right track. We will even check in after students have left to see how they are doing and offer further support and guidance.
