All the staff at The Edge  are responsible for careers education. We have high expectations for all our students and work hard to raise aspirations.  We will explore potential career and education routes and discuss back up plans. However, not everyone has a dream, for those who don’t know what they want to do we will explore options and ensure they experience a range of opportunities to help prepare  for their next steps. Our offer includes:

  1.  A stable careers programme. The careers programme outlines what students will be studying and when. It can be found on the school website and on display in the careers  room.  You will also deliver activities linked to careers in form time, lessons, assemblies and all other subjects. The careers team will support you to explore any opportunities you think will help students learn about jobs in your field.
  2. Learning from career and labour market informationSociety changes very quickly and the jobs students will have in the future may not exist yet. We will signpost you to the most up to date information to help you explore what future study options are availableWe can do this through signposting a range of online tools or one to one guidance from the careers team.
  3. Addressing the needs of each student. Every day you will be working on developing students’ essential skills, the skills they need to succeed in any work placeYou will complete an essential skills audit to work out what their strengths and areas for development are. You will offer a range of experiential learning activities to ensure students engage and develop their skills. At the end of KS3 you will support students to decide what they will be studying in KS4.
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers. Every member of staff  will be supporting students to develop essential skills in every lesson.  We will ask you to share with students why your subject is important and what skills they are developing in their studies.  We all have our own journey to share and can tell them about what career opportunities each subject can lead to.
  5. Encounters with employers and employees. Students will need to meet a range of visitors and  speakers in school to learn about what their role is and what skills are important for their job. In KS4 you will get the opportunity to input mock interviews, enterprise activities and careers fairs
  6. Experiences of workplaces. Students will have a range of experiences and visits built in to their curriculum offer. Each experience will need to be evaluated to feed in to the careers plan for the next academic year.
  7. Encounters with further and higher education. We will ask you to build in visits to other schools, colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers to your curriculum planning.
  8. Personal guidance. The careers team will check in with students regularly  to create a bespoke careers plan and work towards completing a Record of Achievement and a CV in year 11.  Careers activities will be carefully coordinated to cause minimum disruption to learning.
