Dear Parent/Carer,

We have had the opportunity for your child to take part in an exciting project this academic year to help them to understand more about themselves and the world around them. This project is run by our local Careers Hub and funded and evaluated by The Careers & Enterprise Company. You can find out more about the project by speaking to Charlotte Poynton at [email protected].

As a part of this project, we are investigating how engaging in career-related activities might make a difference to children’s engagement in education. Students have taken part in a range of careers related visits and activities throughout the year and have now chosen one placement for the last term from the following options:

Strand 1- Mondays exploring what activities their local community has to offer whilst also developing conversations with participants about self-identity, personal strengths and weaknesses, learning styles and reinforcing their ability to personally contribute to their community.
Strand 2 – Wednesdays working in engineering at Make UK. Learning and practising key engineering skills such as Welding, Fluid Power, CAD and CNC.
Strand 3 –Wednesdays continuing to work on landscaping Kings Heath Park Learning and practising key landscaping and park maintenance skills.
Strand 4 – Fridays working in digital The Pump Learning skills required to be able to produce digital designs and fabricate items from these designs whilst working within relevant health and safety guidelines.

Students will generally be working in pairs or groups of three with one member of staff from school and someone from the project. There may be occasions where they are working independently with project staff and not under supervision of Edge staff, all project staff have full DBS certificates. They will travel to the venues in taxis with Edge staff and will return to the Edge or go directly home if they have permission.

These are fantastic opportunities that could lead to real post-16 options for our students and we hope they take advantage of the fabulous opportunities presented to them.
