The Edge Academy – Shaping Futures

  1. “All Different, All Equal” – anti bullying week

As outlined in last week’s newsletter, a number of activities and focused lessons took place at the Academy this week. It is important that all students understand the full impact of bullying and how to ensure they protect themselves through safe use of the internet and reporting any bullying they are aware of.

2.Children In Need

Supporting good causes is important to us at The Edge, so staff and students were delighted to raise funds for Children in Need last Friday. The academy held a non-uniform day and cake sale- a big thank you to all who contributed!

3. Pizza and Parents’ evening

Thank you to all parents/ carers that joined us at Parents’ Evening last Wednesday. As always, we appreciate your support and it was a pleasure to meet you all/ update you all on your child’s progress. Any Year 11 parents/ carers who were unable to attend will now receive their child’s full academic report in the post.

Students have received letters informing them of the choices for this half term’s reward trip following the success of the launch of this half term. This time they have the choice of: Hollywood Bowling and meal or Go Ape. Students are reminded that they must meet the criteria to attend these visits!

4. Work experience update

As all of our Year 10 and 11 students are now finalising their work experience placements for 2017/8, we are beginning to visit each student in their new surroundings to see how they are getting on. This week we went to see Minister in Y10 who certainly seems to be a popular member of staff at our friends The Clock Café judging by this picture!

5. Star of the Week

Well done to Ryan in Y11 who this week brought Essa’s run of domination to an end in the “Star of the Week” competition. As always, Ryan won this for achieving the highest number of “Star of the Session” awards in lessons this week.

6. Skills show

Year 11s represented the academy superbly this week at The Skills Show at the NEC. Employers were really impressed with the level of their engagement and enthusiasm in finding out about careers and progression routed in to them. One of our priorities is to broaden students’ horizons about what is on offer when they leave and this type of trip helps to do just that.

7. Parent feedback

We recently shared with students their positive logs. This log did not include any of their negative records (if they have any). Thank you to those parents that have feedback about this. We understand that it may have appeared that as no negatives were included, they haven’t received any. This is not necessarily the case but we were wanting to celebrate the positives as we believe this helps students achieve and believe in themselves. If you wish to book an appointment with your child’s tutor or a member of the senior team to discuss their overall behaviour and progress please do not hesitate to contact the academy.

8. Parent/carer communication

A further reminder that as well as handing letters, newsletters etc to students regarding academy news, we now put all letters on our website (www.theedgeacademy.co.uk) and text links to you each time this happens. We also post reminders on Twitter (address @edgenorthfield or go to website at www.twitter.com/edgenorthfield) and Facebook (address @edgeacademynorthfield or go to website at www.facebook.com/edgeacademynorthfield). Please follow/like our social media accounts as they provide exciting additional snapshots of academy life! Finally, we now also have a parent/carer electronic mailing list- if you have not already signed up for this, e-mail Vice Principal Andrew Wakefield at [email protected] and we will then e-mail all academy letters to you.

9. Mince Pie Cookery Masterclass – Thursday 7th December

The next of our mighty “Cookery Masterclasses” takes place on Thursday December 7th 5pm-7pm. This time it’s a “Mince Pie Masterclass”- as always, it’s completely free of charge and open to the public! Simply e-mail [email protected] to reserve your place!

10. School Pet

We are looking to adopt a school pet. It is most likely to be a hamster or guinea pig. It is essential that we always have up to date medical and allergy information from parents so please do not hesitate to contact us if circumstances change. Parents with any concerns regarding the new school pet should contact reception.
