  1. Rewards trips: Go Ape/ Hollywood Bowl/ Frankie and Benny’s

Students enjoyed a great day on Tuesday as it was our second “Reward Trip Day” of 2017/18. Learners who met the attendance criteria were able to choose between a trip to Go Ape Cannock or a Hollywood Bowl/ Frankie and Benny’s Group Activity Day and a superb time was had by all! Some pictures are attached here from the trips- we can’t wait for the next ones in January!

  1. Inspection visits

We have recently hosted a number of monitoring visits as part of external quality assurance processes alongside our internal improvement planning.

A safeguarding inspection visit involved checking our single central register, recruitment processes, and systems for ensuring the safety and well-being of students. The visit included a tour by one of our Year 11 students who really impressed our visitors with his engagement levels and his ability to articulate what The Edge Academy has done for him. Our students make us proud every day and it is always good to hear praise for them from visitors.

A fire safety inspection visit was carried out by the fire service to ensure our building and practices are safe and compliant. The officers gave the following feedback:

“We are impressed with the systems in place. It is clear there is good management.”

We welcome feedback from external visitors and always use it as an opportunity for further improvement.

  1. Friday brunch reward event

We were delighted to run our 11th Friday Brunch reward event today, and the normal array of praise certificates were given out as always. Well done to Caitlin in Y10 who won this week’s “Star of the Week” award and Minister in Y10 who won this week’s “Outstanding Performance in English” award. Minister can be seen here receiving his award from a new starter (Brad in Y10) who he had helped settle into his new course. Also seen pictured here is Tom in Y11 who was just one of the many students who received a 100% attendance certificate for last week.

4. Enrichment

Enrichment and different educational experiences for students are important to us so we were delighted to extend our Friday enrichment programme this week to include a new weekly slot at Blackwell Adventure. Pictures are attached here of what some of the students got up to!

5. Mince pie cookery masterclass – Thursday 7th December

A reminder that the next of our mighty “Cookery Masterclasses” takes place on Thursday December 7th 5pm-7pm. This time it’s a “Mince Pie Masterclass”- as always, it’s completely free of charge and open to the public! Simply e-mail [email protected] to reserve your place!

6. Community news

We always pride ourselves on serving our community so were delighted when the B31 Voices website reported some of the superb work our dedicated staff did in assisting a member of the public on Friday. Well done once more to the quick-thinking staff who were able to step in and help following a car collision – we wish all who were affected a speedy recovery!

  1. Meet the staff: Jackie Bailey

We have recently welcomed Jackie Bailey back from a long term absence. The students greatly missed her whilst she was off and are as pleased as us to have her back.

Jackie has worked at the academy since January 2016 as Assistant Principal with responsibility for student behaviour and well-being. Alongside her senior leadership responsibilities, Jackie teaches science.

8.School pet

Parents will all have received a letter in the post about the possibility of the academy getting a school pet. Following a recent student voice, we are exploring getting a hamster which will enable us to deliver animal care courses in the future. Students will also have the opportunity to be responsible for caring for the hamster both in school and at home if they so choose.

9. Communication with parents/carers

Please remember that as well as handing letters to students regarding academy news, we now put all letters on our website (www.theedgeacademy.co.uk) and text links to you each time this happens. We also post reminders on Twitter (address @edgenorthfield or go to website at www.twitter.com/edgenorthfield) and Facebook (address @edgeacademynorthfield or go to website at www.facebook.com/edgeacademynorthfield). Please follow/like our social media accounts as they provide exciting additional snapshots of academy life! Finally, we now also have a parent/carer electronic mailing list- if you have not already signed up for this, e-mail Vice Principal Andrew Wakefield at [email protected] and we will then e-mail all academy letters to you.
